Capitol Hill

Posted by Rachel Meinke on 10/30/2016

It's easy to say that the character of any large city in America is enhanced by its culturally rich neighborhoods.

In Tulsa you’ve got Greenwood, the Brady Arts district, the Blue Dome and so many more. In Oklahoma City there’s Midtown, Deep Deuce, the Plaza District, the Asian district...and on and on!

In The Living Room today we’re turning the light on Oklahoma City’s Capitol Hill District, just south of Downtown bordering the Oklahoma River. A Wichita newspaper man bought the land in the Run of ‘89, and called it Capitol Hill. It actually was a separate city for awhile with dreams of making it the state Capitol. That didn’t happen and Capitol Hill merged with Oklahoma City in 1910 and what followed has been a wild ride of commercial prosperity, years of decline, and now solid, steady, exciting growth. LISTEN NOW and meet Donna Cervantes and Randy King. Donna is Executive Director of historic Capitol Hill’s business improvement district and Randy is the publisher of the state’s largest Hispanic newspaper, based in Capitol Hill.

The old Oklahoma City Community College Capitol Hill Center has been a mainstay in this neighborhood for years, but when a brand new center opens its doors next fall, the educational and community impact will be tremendous. LISTEN NOW to Jerry Steward, president of Oklahoma City Community College, talk about what's in store next for this Capitol Hill mainstay.
