Both Sides Now: Springtime in Oklahoma

April 2016

As the famous song "Both Sides Now" suggests, springtime in Oklahoma definitely has two sides: storm season and the season of rebirth and growth.

On May 31, 2013, the Canadian Valley Technology Center in El Reno, Okla., lost all nine of its buildings when a tornado swept across town.  Three years later, out of the destruction, the school is in the process of rebuilding. Lechelle Calderwood, Canadian Valley Technology Center Graphics Design Instructor, assigned her students the task of writing and illustrating a children's book about rebuilding and resilience.  Arion Vaught, a Canadian Valley Technology Center Graphics Design student, wrote "The Storm That Hit Home" an inspiring tale that was selected as the best work by his classmates. Dr. Greg Winters, Canadian Valley Technology Center Superintendent, Lechelle Calderwood, Canadian Valley Technology Center Graphics Design Instructor and Arion Vaught, are here in The Living Room to let us know how Canadian Valley is going through a rebirth out in El Reno.  LISTEN NOW

Mike Knopp, is also ready for springtime.  Mike is the Executive Director of the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, and is here in The Living Room to talk about the exciting, brand new whitewater and kayaking center that's opening on the Oklahoma River next month. The new $45.2 million whitewater rafting and kayaking center, will hold a grand opening celebration in May. The whitewater center was built in the city’s Boathouse District as a MAPS 3 project. The grand opening event will feature Team USA’s Road to Rio Tour. The interactive tour will give fans a chance to experience the spirit of the Olympic Games, try their hand at some of the sports and meet Team USA athletes. LISTEN NOW
