What would it be like to come to this country as an immigrant - leaving all that’s familiar behind and speaking little or no English? What would it be like for a American Citizen to go to the Mexican Border and meet these immigrants face to face as they navigate the system to be admitted?

During this episode of The Living Room we will look at the immigrant experience from both sides of the border - with people who have been there and people who help once they’re here. LISTEN NOW

First, we’ll see what it’s like before immigrants get to Oklahoma by visiting with Rachel Jones, a Spanish teacher at Mount St. Mary’s High School in Oklahoma City. Last fall she took a trip to the border as a participant in the second annual border immersion experience, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. LISTEN NOW

Next, we’ll meet with the Oklahomans who help immigrants break down the language barrier once they arrive in our state. We’ll visit with Desjean Jones, the Executive Director of Opportunities Industrialization Center of Oklahoma County (OIC)and Ashley Rhone, who teaches conversational English class at OIC.  LISTEN NOW

The Living Room with Gerry Bonds is supported by Adventure Road. From the Red River Border to the heart of Oklahoma City, the great American road trip has been reborn. Information at
